MLK Tournament 2022 – California Baptist University (1.15.21)

Jase Evangelista, RHP – MLK HS (2023)

Evangelista threw three innings on the day. He cruised in the second inning as he got three outs on 10 pitches; all of which were strikes. He did struggle with his control a little in the first and third inning, but did not miss by much and was consistently around the plate. Evangelista displayed a FB, CB, SL mix during game action, and threw a couple change ups in warm ups. His overall control was fairly advanced and he threw all three pitches for strikes. Evangelista got into a couple jams, but worked through them very well and featured nice pitchability on the mound. He delivered his fastball fastball from a high three-quarter slot, and the pitch featured nice downhill plane. The movement on the pitch was mostly vertical and it was delivered without much effort. Evangelista delivered his curve ball from a similar arm slot as his fastball, and the pitch illustrated a 12-6 shape with fringe, albeit inconsistent, bite. The pitch was also inconsistent on when it broke; sometimes tunneling well and breaking fairly late, and at other times popping out of the tunnel soon and breaking early. Still, his curve ball is his best pitch, his out pitch, and a pitch he can throw for a strike in any situation or count. Evangelista also displayed a slider that was cutter-like, featuring mostly horizontal movement and flashing decent bite. The slider was a nice compliment to his other two pitches and helped keep hitters off balance.

Landon Greenhouse, OF – MLK HS (2023)

Greenhouse went 2 for 3 on the day. He got a fastball in a 2-2 count during his first at bat and produced a line-drive triple into the center-right field gap; showing off his above average run speed in the process. In his second at bat Greenhouse pulled a ground ball into left field on a 1-1 fastball. He was first pitch swinging in his last at bat flying out to right field on a pitch he was a little late on. Greenhouse was solid overall and roamed centerfield with relative ease. In this game Greenhouse featured a toe-tap back during the gatehring part of his loading process. Last year when I saw him, he featured a high leg kicked during his gather. Greenhouse has always had many moving parts in his swing, but the toe-tap back creates an extra moving part and adds to his swing time making it difficult for him to get into a solid launch position.

Cameron Kim, SS – Norco HS (2023)

Kim went 2 for 3 on the day. In his first at bat he did a great job staying on a 1-2 breaking ball and sent a line-drive to right field for a hustle double. In his second at bat Kim lined out to left field on a 1-1 fastball that he was slightly out in front of. In his third at bat Kim was out in front on a first pitch breaking ball, but hit the pitch at a bat angle that produced a soft fly ball into shallow right field for a single. The UCLA commit did not have any opportunities at shortstop, but made a great play at second base on an bad throw from the outfield. After a single into right field the batter-runner attempted to stretch the hit into a double, and on the throw from the outfielder Kim dove, picked the ball, and made the tag on the sliding base runner all in one motion. It was a tremendous combination of skill and instinct.

RJ Holmes, SS – Paloma Valley HS (2025)

Holmes went 2 for 2 with a walk on the day. This was the second time I have seen the young freshman and it is immediately obvious that he has a knack for getting on base. He singled on a ground ball into the 5-6 hole to lead off the game, walked in his second at bat after being down 1-2, and singled on a line-drive into left field in his third at bat. Holmes possesses plus run speed; I had him home to 1st base at 4.18 seconds in his first at bat. He also features fairly smooth actions, nice quickness, and fair footwork at shortstop. Not including in-game power, the biggest weakness in Holmes game is his arm. His current arm strength is well below average and his arm action is poor. He has trouble staying on top of the baseball, as he never really gets the ball up, and features a short-arm motion. The motion is quick, but it looks as though he is shot putting the ball over to first base. Thus, the throws I have seen from him have been very inaccurate.
